A quick photo update to acknowledge a bit of a bummer in the veggie garden. Wildlife, 1. Rosslyn, 0. The deer damaged Swiss chard in today’s dispatch may yet recover. I’m pinning my hopes on that possibility.

When denizens of Rosslyn’s backlands challenge our abundance mindset, it’s tempting to become vexed. Inevitable even. At first. Gggrrr… We’ve worked hard to push plants out of seed and earth, we’ve husbanded and nourished and waited oh-so-patiently. And we’ve anticipated. The harvest. The taste.

But after that first flood of frustration upon discovering the deer damaged Swiss chard, we fall back on our confident commitment to gardening enough for all. Well, not all, perhaps, but many. This abundance mindset isn’t unique to our holistic gardening and holistic orcharding practices. We’ve tried to apply it to our lives in general. Our work. Our family. Our friendships. Sometimes our efforts get gobbled up sans gratitude or recourse. Sometimes. But rarely, in the grander scheme of things. Mostly our generosity returns manyfold.

And, who’s to say that the whitetail deer who munched these plants weren’t grateful? And they left the stems and roots intact, so maybe these otherwise healthy Swiss Chard plants will push up new succulent foliage for us to harvest. I suspect they will!
What do you think?
